2025-02-06: Visit by female technicians at the PLRI

Innovative Developments at the Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics

On February 6th, a group visited the Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics in Braunschweig. After an introduction by Julian Bollmann, a scientific staff member, the institute’s Smart Home area was showcased. Here, the continuous monitoring of vital data such as body temperature, blood oxygen saturation, and skin moisture is achieved using innovative sensors integrated into door handles and furniture. The goal is to detect even the smallest changes early to monitor people's health.

Another highlight was a prototype electric scooter that measures an ECG while the rider's hands are on the handlebars. Additionally, a car prototype was presented, where the steering wheel is equipped with sensors to monitor the driver's heartbeat and facial color. These technologies, some of which are tested in real-life apartments, have the potential to drive real innovations and may even lead to start-ups. The continuous optimization of the collected data could enable early detection of health risks, such as a heart attack.
