Smart Health Environemnts

General aim

In this research area, we explore the apartment or the vehicle as a further location for healthcare. We transform such environments as diagnostic and therapeutic spaces, ranging from continuous health monitoring to a secure and self-determined living at age. Hence, we support the transformation of our health systems from a purely therapeutic approach toward a preventive medicine.

Focus of research

• Our Living Lab provides a completely equipped sleeping room, a fully functional bathroom, and a combined kitchenette/living room. The Lab follows a room-in-room concept. It is used to test health-enabling technologies, sensors, and bus systems.
• In cooperation with the Nibelungen Wohnbau GmbH, we have 6 apartments in Bochumer Str., Braunschweig, which are occupied by real people delivering real data from about 600 sensors per apartment.
• A Volkswagen Tiguan is our mobile experimental vehicle. We embed acceleration sensors in the seat, a digital stethoscope in the seat belt, PPG and ECG electrodes in the steering wheel, and several camera systems.
• A Volkswagen ID4 provides the electrical pendant of the Tiguan. Integrating the same sensors, we use this vehicle to particularly study the electrical environment.
