2026-08-05: Car as a Health Monitor - Interview DLF

In the interview with Deutschlandfunk, Prof. Dr. Thomas Deserno explains which vital parameters the vehicles can detect, how the data is analyzed, and what potential cars have as mobile health-monitoring environments.

How could a car in the future not only take people from A to B, but also collect information about their state of health?

This is the question being explored in a research project in which two cars have been transformed into so-called “diagnostic health spaces.” During the journey or while inside the vehicle, various vital parameters are recorded and subsequently analyzed using appropriate methods.

The project goes beyond simply monitoring a driver’s fitness to drive. Researchers are investigating which health-related information can be detected inside a car, what role the vehicle environment itself plays, and what additional benefits such a system could offer compared with conventional wearables such as smartwatches.
